Health and Well-Being: Supporting Our Employees With Chronic Illnesses

10/22/2024

TotalEnergies is now a signatory of the Working with Cancer pledge, which illustrates the Company’s support for its employees suffering from cancer. Health is one of the key pillars of our worldwide Care Together program. In this month dedicated to raising awareness of breast cancer around the world, find out what we are doing to support our employees suffering from chronic illnesses.

Protecting our employees’ health: a commitment around the world

TotalEnergies has been committed to protecting its employees’ health and well-being for many years. Health is one of the cornerstones of our worldwide Care Together program, which we launched in 2024 to reflect our social responsibility commitment towards our employees. The aim is to safeguard the physical and mental health of our teams around the world. To achieve this, we have introduced a policy to prevent psychosocial risks, and we also organize health check-ups for our employees on a regular basis to help detect any diseases such as cancer.

The World Health Organization estimates that there are 20 million new cases of cancer every year, and that one in five people will develop cancer in their lifetime. This disease can affect each and every one of us either directly or indirectly. That is why we pay special attention to supporting our employees faced with cancer or other chronic illnesses. This involves adapting workspaces and working hours to take account of the state of health of the person concerned at every stage in their illness, as well as providing dedicated tools, resources and services.

A pilot platform in France to reconcile illness and work

In 2024, we launched a pilot project for our employees in France(1). This digital platform is designed to help employees cope with chronic illnesses, whether they are patients, managers or caregivers, from the moment that the diagnosis is announced until they return to work. The project was prompted by our determination to improve support, keep affected employees in work and remove the taboo on cancer and other chronic illnesses.

With the Alex platform developed by startup We Care @Work, our employees who are directly or indirectly affected by the disease can access a wealth of practical advice on how to improve their daily lives, with invitations to coffee meetings and webinars, a dedicated hotline and specific support to prepare for their return to work. In short, Alex has been designed to provide information and simplify procedures, while acting as a real coach for returning to work, which builds on our existing schemes to protect our employees’ health and well-being.
