Climate and Sustainable Energy

Climate and Sustainable Energy

Energy is an essential resource, fundamental to consumers’ lifestyles, the competitive performance of businesses, and the energy security of consumer countries. To tackle the climate challenge in a just and orderly manner, we must increase the pace of the energy transition while adapting to the specific needs of the various regions around the world. Expectations and challenges differ between OECD countries that are working to become carbon neutral by 2050, and countries from the Global South for which access to energy is integral to their legitimate desire to improve their standard of living. TotalEnergies has adopted a strategy where it continues to supply the energy the world needs today, while accelerating the transition toward low-carbon energy in a responsible and sustainable way.

The Company is taking action to reinvent energy and achieve its ambition of carbon neutrality by 2050, together with society, by:

  • reducing the emissions generated by its operated facilities, and
  • investing in low-carbon energies and supporting its customers to change their habits.

Reducing our emissions

All fossil energy producers must make reducing their direct emissions a top priority. That is why TotalEnergies has put in place an ambitious action plan to constantly reduce its direct greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1+2).

Our ambition: carbon neutrality by 2050, together with society.

To make this happen, we are taking action, in particular by stopping routine flaring, gradually eliminating methane emissions and improving energy efficiency.

Improving our products and supporting our customers

TotalEnergies helps to reduce the emissions generated by its customers’ energy use by investing heavily in developing renewable energy and natural gas – a transition fuel – while providing a comprehensive range of emission-reducing products and services.

Because it is by providing more and more low-carbon products and services that we help transform the energy demand and enable our customers to cut their emissions.

We track our progress on products and demand using the lifecycle carbon intensity, which is the ratio between the lifecycle emissions of our energy products sold (Scope 1+2+3) and the quantity of energy supplied (g CO2e/MJ).

We are acting on the lifecycle carbon intensity of our energy mix

Our ambition: achieve carbon neutrality by 2025, together with society

The energy transition requires the participation of all stakeholders, from regulators to end customers and industrial players. TotalEnergies is deploying a strategy that supports this collective transition and will enable our Company to adapt to the different scenarios that may materialize depending on developments in low-carbon technologies (adoption rate, cost reduction), geopolitical relations, international trade and consumer behavior.

We develop CCS and offset residual emissions with nature-based carbon sinks
