Sustainable mobility

Feature Story

Whether light vehicles or heavy goods vehicles, TotalEnergies is actively focused on pioneering tangible solutions to promote a safer, cleaner and more efficient form of mobility, from the aviation industry through to the shipping sector. We firmly believe that a range of complementary solutions, rather than a single solution, is needed to address the mobility needs of tomorrow's world.

When it comes to solving the dual equation of leading change in the transport sector and tackling the climate challenge, TotalEnergies is committed to developing an increasingly low-carbon array of solutions (producing affordable high-performance batteries, ramping up the use of natural gas for road vehicles and liquefied natural gas as a marine fuel, promoting biofuel, and so on) and providing all users with access to a sustainable and more eco-friendly form of mobility.

TotalEnergies is expanding its network of recharging points with the goal of operating 150,000 recharging points by 2025

Belgium: TotalEnergies strengthens its sustainable mobility development activities

The Flemish government recently awarded TotalEnergies the contract to install 1,500 electric vehicle charging points in Antwerp.

In the heart of Europe and in Belgium's most populous city, the company is reinforcing its commitment to offering and developing sustainable mobility, with the aim of becoming Belgium's leading company in the public charging market by 2024.

ACC, a key player in electric mobility in Europe

For TotalEnergies and its partners, providing support for mobility as Europe makes its energy transition also means securing the supply of an essential component for the automotive industry and for the increase of electric vehicles on the continent.

Since 2020, ACC has applied its expertise to designing, producing and marketing reliable, high-performance and competitive batteries on a large scale. The goal: to produce enough batteries to equip more than 2.5 million vehicles a year by 2030, in compliance with the highest quality and environmental protection standards.

Shipping activities driving the Company's transformation ambitions

TotalEnergies is developing the use of LNG and bioLNG as marine fuels in a bid to decarbonize shipping in alignment with the strategy adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

LNG as a marine fuel is not only immediately available, but also the best solution for reducing the shipping industry's environmental footprint. Liquefied natural gas can reduce sulfur oxide emissions by 99%, fine particulate emissions by 91% and nitrogen oxide emissions by 92%.

Using liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel contributes to the IMO's long-term strategy of reducing the greenhouse gas emissions from ships.

Net zero objective for air transportation by 2050

TotalEnergies is ramping up the development of sustainable aviation fuels in an effort to decarbonize the aviation sector and meet the requirements of French and European legislation. In keeping with its ambition of achieving net zero by 2050 together with society, TotalEnergies is drawing on its expertise to rein in CO2 emissions in the aviation sector.

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) can play a key role in decarbonizing this form of transport. French legislation stipulates that there must be a 1% blend of SAF-type biofuel for all outbound flights leaving France from 2022, while Europe's ambition is to achieve a 2% blend by 2025 and a 5% blend by 2030.

Producing biofuels to reduce the carbon footprint of air travel

In line with our ambition to be carbon neutral by 2050, together with society, TotalEnergies offers a comprehensive range of products and is actively involved in decarbonizing the aviation sector.

With the recent (La MèdeNormandie) or forthcoming (Grandpuits) opening of sites focused on the production of future energies and biofuels, the company is helping its customers to make the transition to energy.

With this infographic, get an overview of our activities and achievements in the aviation sector.

By producing sustainable aviation fuel at our French sites today, we are able to respond to strong demand from an aviation industry looking to reduce its carbon footprint, while adapting our industrial resources. SAF is the most efficient solution to immediately reduce CO2 emissions from air travel, and its development is fully in line with the Company’s Climate ambition to get to net zero by 2050, together with society.

The world of sport concerned by the challenges of sustainable mobility

For the first time in the endurance event’s history, the 62 race cars competing in the 90th 24 Hours of Le Mans (June 11-12, 2022) will be supplied with a 100% renewable fuel developed and produced by TotalEnergies: Excellium Racing 100. This zero-oil fuel will deliver a reduction in CO2 emissions of at least 65% over its lifecycle.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans, the third round of the FIA World Endurance Championship and an iconic motorsports event, will take place for the first time with a 100% renewable fuel. Excellium Racing 100 is a major milestone in the partnership between TotalEnergies and Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO), which is pursing an energy transition and environmental strategy that is aligned with TotalEnergies' ambition to get to net zero by 2050, together with society.
