On behalf of Total, Manoelle Lepoutre, Senior Vice President Civil and Society Engagement, signed a national call to action from businesses to promote road safety yesterday at the French Interior Ministry.
Total believes that safety is a shared responsibility. Because road traffic accidents are the leading cause of job-related fatalities in France, the Group decided to join the call for employee road safety alongside 21 other French companies.
As a player in the mobility sector with more than four million service station customers every day, Total is convinced that progress will be achieved most effectively through multi-party approaches and that the private sector has a key role to play in reducing the number of road traffic fatalities.
By implementing strict rules and conducting regular awareness campaigns, Total intends to become a road safety leader and to bring about lasting change in driver behavior.
In signing the call, the businesses are committed to:
- Limiting cell phone use when driving to emergency situations.
- Prohibiting employees from driving under the influence of alcohol.
- Demanding that seat belts be worn at all times.
- Ordering drivers to comply with speed limits.
- Including rest stops in travel time calculations.
- Promoting road safety training.
- Encouraging motorcyclists to use best quality equipment.
A long-time road safety champion, Total goes above and beyond a number of these commitments, for example by formally prohibiting cell phone use while driving. The Group takes action to promote the safety of its employees on the roads all over the world – regardless of local regulations. In Africa, the vehicle fleet has therefore been replaced to ensure it meets international safety recommendations, with seat belts, ABS, airbags for the driver and all passengers, and vehicles that are less than five years old.
