TotalEnergies supports sustainable mobility

Electric Vehicle, Carling Saint-Avold, France

Transportation is currently undergoing a critical transformation in response to climate challenges, changing technologies and emerging user habits. Whether for passenger cars or for trucks, TotalEnergies is supporting the development of practical solutions for making mobility safer, cleaner and more efficient. We believe that tomorrow’s mobility does not call for a one-size-fits-all approach, but rather for a full range of complementary solutions.

Constantly improving the energy efficiency of vehicles

Excellium promises to protect the engine while on the road. Suitable for all vehicle types, both new and old, this range of additive-enhanced fuels is designed to keep engines clean over time in order to maintain their efficiency.

To support advances in engine technology, TotalEnergies has also designed the range of Fuel Economy lubricants, which help reduce CO2 emissions without compromising the operation of vehicles’ post-treatment systems. With this range, we are addressing a need shared by the general public and businesses to improve the performance and lifespan of their vehicles while reducing consumption and shrinking their environmental footprint.

In the automotive industry, TotalEnergies is investing in polymers as a substitute for heavier materials, such as steel, when manufacturing products. Using polymers for the bodywork of vehicles makes it possible to reduce their weight by half and thereby save up to 0.2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers traveled.

Biocomponents in our fuels

Biofuels are a type of fuel made from renewable raw materials. The CO2 consumed by plants during growth partly offsets the emissions produced when burning biofuels, meaning that they have less of an impact on the climate than fossil fuels.

The European Union has set ambitious regulations in the field of transportation: by 2030, at least 32% of gross final energy consumption in each Member State must come from renewable sources.

To help achieve this target and realize its ambition of becoming a biofuel market leader, TotalEnergies is aiming to increase its production and distribution of biofuels. In 2021, we marketed 3.3 million metric tons of biofuels worldwide.

Since 2019, TotalEnergies' La Mède platform hosts France’s first world-class biorefinery. One of the largest in Europe, the facility has a production rate of 500,000 metric tons of high-quality HVO-type biofuel per year.

Our multi-energy solutions

Natural gas for vehicles (NGV) is an alternative fuel that is driving the energy transition in the fields of passenger travel and goods transportation.

NGV, which can come from either fossil or renewable sources, is known to be a particularly clean energy – it is quiet and emits only small amounts of pollutants and greenhouse gas. TotalEnergies already has 400 natural gas fueling stations, including 200 in Europe. As we strongly believe that natural gas has a role to play in sustainable mobility, we are stepping up the deployment of new NGV stations in Europe in our network, with the aim of operating 450 natural gas fueling stations by 2025. By doing so, we intend to become the market leader in the region. With the acquisition in 2017 of the Dutch company PitPoint B.V., one of the European leaders in natural gas and biogas, this ambition is already becoming a reality.

Tapping into the fast-growing electric vehicle market

The increasing range of electric vehicles (EVs) is positioning them as an ideal solution for the future. By acquiring G2Mobility, today known as TotalEnergies, we can now provide our customers with optimized EV charging solutions. Nearly 100 service stations in Europe are already equipped and we operate more than 25,000 EV charging facilities in Europe on behalf of local authorities and business customers, with the aim of operating 150,000 EV charging points by 2025. In the following years, we intend to expand our network in Europe with EV charging stations every 150 km. Indeed, we have been awarded Europe’s largest concession contract for EV charging and will install and operate up to 20,000 new public charging points in the Netherlands on behalf of Metropolitan Region Amsterdam Electric.
In line with our ambition of providing accessible energy, we have also started to equip our network with ultra-fast electric vehicle charging stations on major highway routes.

Investing in clean energy with hydrogen

TotalEnergies has also decided to focus on hydrogen in order to diversify its EV activities. Hydrogen vehicles are electric vehicles. However, unlike conventional EVs, which run on electricity stored in a battery, hydrogen vehicles are powered by a fuel cell that converts hydrogen into electricity. The environmental benefits (such as zero polluting exhaust emissions) and practical advantages (such as driving comfort) make these vehicles key to the sustainable mobility of tomorrow.

Almost a decade ago, we set up together with five industry partners the H2 Mobility joint venture in Germany to develop hydrogen mobility. We are also investing in the creation of a network of hydrogen supply stations for road transportation heavy duty vehicles and local authorities. We aim to operate directly or through our holdings up to 150 hydrogen stations dedicated to heavy duty vehicles in Europe by 2030.
