Data at Total

For someone like me who loves data analysis, Total is an incredible place because there’s data everywhere, coming not just from our industrial and sales operations but also from our work in renewables and mobility.

To give a few examples:

• Total has a database of over 10 million customers, helping us to continuously improve our energy production and distribution services.
• We have 15 PB of seismic data archives, which allow us to understand what’s happening in the ground. This information is invaluable for our exploration operations as well as for our carbon capture and storage projects.
• Tens of millions of sensors continuously record data on our operations, including oil and gas extraction, refining, solar and wind power generation, and battery production. Thanks to this data, we can optimize our processes, improve employee safety and control our costs.

In 2020, Total’s Digital Factory was set up to extract even more value from this data. The Factory is made up of 300 people who develop 50 applications per year. 80% of these applications draw on the Group’s historical data and 50% harness advanced machine learning, all for the benefit of my colleagues and our customers.
