In the low-carbon gas segment, the Company intends to develop the production and marketing of biogas, mainly in Europe and the United States, in order to meet incorporation obligations and to support its clients who wish to decarbonize their own activities.

What is biogas?

Biogas is a renewable gas produced by the anaerobic digestion (fermentation) of organic plant or animal waste collected from farmers, the food industry and local authorities.

Once purified, biogas becomes biomethane(1), a gas that has the same properties as natural gas and which can therefore be injected into distribution networks or used as an alternative fuel for land and sea transport (bioNGV or bioLNG). The digestate, a by-product of anaerobic digestion, can be used as a high added-value organic fertilizer instead of synthetic fertilizers.

The biogas sector is making a full contribution to the objectives of the energy transition, namely the development of renewable energies, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the development of the circular economy.

Becoming a world-class player in the sector

Our ambition is to become a world-class player in biogas in Europe and key international markets. To achieve that aim, we are working alongside innovative and market-leading partners.

At the end of 2025, TotalEnergies’ total production capacity reached 1.4 TWh eq. of biomethane. This represents the treatment of approximately 1.7 Mt/y of organic waste to provide renewable gas to the equivalent of 280,000 inhabitants, making it possible to avoid the emission of around 280 kt CO2e/y(2). With the digestate from anaerobic digestion, around 48 kt/y of chemical fertilizers are replaced by a natural fertilizer.

TotalEnergies and biogas in France

In addition to being a transitional energy, biogas contributes to securing the gas supply of France and Europe.

TotalEnergies’ combined biomethane and biogas gross production capacity in France stands at nearly 800 GWh/y. At the end of 2025, the Company had 13 production units in France for biogas used to generate electricity and heat, or purified to produce biomethane.

TotalEnergies has partnered with HitecVision to accelerate the development of Polska Grupa Biogazowa (PGB), Poland’s leading biogas company. With 20 facilities in operation and 450 GWh of capacity, PGB aims to produce 2 TWh of biomethane equivalent by 2030.

We are accelerating the sector’s development in the United States, especially through joint-ventures with market-leading players, such as Clean Energy and Vanguard Renewables.
