Status and objectives

This infographic provides an overview of TotalEnergies' water withdrawals and aqueous discharges and its objectives in this area.

1,396 million cubic meters of water withdrawn in 2023, of which:

• 9% freshwater, used for:
  • production of steam necessary for industrial processes,
  • cooling in cooling towers (refining-petrochemicals sites, gas plants),
  • processes, maintenance, sanitary uses, to a lesser extent.
• 82% sea water, used for:
  • open loop cooling,
  • injection into reservoirs at offshore sites,
  • production of green hydrogen (after desalination),
  • supply for fire-fighting systems.
• 9% production water, partly used for reinjection into reservoirs.

Wastewater undergoes appropriate treatment prior to is discharge to the natural environment, to make it compliant with the regulations and our standards.

We measure the quality of our aqueous discharges in freshwater and coastal areas. In 2023, the average hydrocarbon content of our aqueous discharges was 1.9 milligrams per liter. The European regulatory limit is 2.5 milligrams per liter.

Our discharge quality objective for 2030 is not to exceed 1 milligram per liter. 86% of our sites were already compliant with this target in 2023.
