Pillar 2 of TotalEnergies’ Diversity Progam for the Tilenga Project: The Savannah

06/05/2023

The Tilenga project in Uganda is located in the Albertine Rift region, a biodiversity-sensitive area. As part of this project, the Company has set up a biodiversity program covering four key ecosystems: the Murchison Falls National Park, the savannah, the wetlands and the forests. Discover the second pillar illustrated.

Pillar 2: The Savanna

Main objective:

Protecting the integrity and connectivity of the savanna habitats in and around the Bugungu Wildlife Reserve.

Why are we taking action?

Lions, elephants and other key species depend on different savanna habitats for survival. We want to help preserve the ecological value of these habitats

What are our practical actions?

Managing the impact of new arrivals on savanna habitats and their wildlife by managing the risks to the reserve and its surroundings:

  • supporting UWA to manage the reserve through enhanced law enforcement eorts and operational management measures (training for the rangers, the provision of equipment and targeted patrols);
  • working with the communities to ensure the sustainable use of the reserve for cattle grazing and firewood collection;
  • preserving existing habitats and contribute to habitat recovery by removing invasive plant species.

By 2045 the program aims to:

  • increase the lion and elephant populations by 25%;
  • maintain the populations of other animals, including the Lelwel hartebeest, Ugandan kob and Nubian giraffe;
  • maintain the extent and quality of dierent savanna habitats within the reserve.
