Pillar 1: The Murchison Falls National Park

Main objective:

Reducing human pressures on the Murchison Falls Protected Area. Our operations affect only 0.03% of the park's surface area.

Why are we taking action?

The human pressure on natural resources has lead to increased poaching and human-wildlife conflict issues in and around the park. This is also Uganda's largest national park, and is very important to the tourist industry.

What are our practical actions?

Working with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to address the risk of increased pressures on the wildlife in the park with enhanced park protection and community-based management.

• helping the UWA to improve law enforcement, strengthen capacity and ensure robust operational management of the park;
• supporting communities by identifying and implementing income-generating opportunities to address the causes of poaching and human-wildlife conflict;
• improving the quality and extent of habitats inside the park by removing invasive species.

By 2045 the program aims to:

• increase the lion and elephant populations by 25%;
• maintain the populations of Lelwel hartebeest, Ugandan kob and Nubian giraffes;
• maintain habitats at their baseline levels in terms of both land area and quality;
• support improvements in park management and infrastructure, to allow the reintroduction of a secure, globally significant and growing population of eastern black rhinoceros.
