Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF)

Air transportation currently accounts for close to 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

For over ten years TotalEnergies has been developing solutions to decarbonize this industry, helping its customers achieve their CO₂ emissions reduction targets. And the Company's preferred solution is the production and distribution of SAF. SAF stands for Sustainable Aviation Fuel. It's a mature solution available now with lifecycle CO₂ emissions reduced by up to 90% compared to the fossil equivalent. Most of the SAF distributed by TotalEnergies is produced in Europe, from circular economy, waste and residues such as used cooking oil and animal fats. After production, the SAF is mixed with JET-A1, the standard fuel for jet planes, in a blend of up to 50%.

The advantage of this solution is that the SAF/JET-A1 blend requires no changes to distribution infrastructure or the engines of the aircraft, while providing the same safety and product quality as the standard fuel. The Company intends to be a major player in SAF production, and is aiming to reach 1,5 Mtpa by 2030. TotalEnergies is leveraging its European complexes at Grandpuits, Normandy, la Mède, Antwerp and Leuna, and is also examining projects in the Middle East and Asia. And to go even further, the Company is working on the development of e-fuels. These alternative fuels are produced from green hydrogen and CO₂. They will, in the longer term, be available to our customers alongside bio-based SAF. Whatever the technology, TotalEnergies is stribing to offert decarbonization solutions to its customers in the aviation sector.
