On-screen: What happened?

Voice-over: Our driver had been careful, following the main safety rules, until he was distracted by the horn of the vehicle behind him, when he forgot a basic rule: concentrate on your driving. There are many distractions on the road, both outside and inside the vehicle. They can be visual, cognitive, physical or auditory. Distractions slow your reflexes, affect your judgement and can cause serious accidents.

On-screen: Best practice

Voice-over: Before starting your vehicle, store or attach any object that could move or fall. Program your satnav before setting off. Don’t use your cellphone while driving, even with a hands-free kit. Calling while driving increases the risk of an accident by four; sending a text message by 23. Put it away and silence it so that you are not tempted to pick up. Keep your attention on the road and all your senses alert. Avoid any activity that might distract you while driving. If you have to deal with something urgent that is likely to distract you, or if you want to eat or drink, stop in a safe place. Pedestrians, be aware of your environment. You are permitted to use your cellphone, but walking and of course crossing the road with your eyes glued to the screen can be fatal. Driving requires careful attention and vigilance at all times. Respecting the rules can save your life, and those of other road users. Safety for me, for you, for all.
