I’m a #Safedriver Episode 1: Keeping Your Vehicle Under Control in All Circumstances

Keeping a safe distance has saved me from more than one accident.

Good visibility is vital for truck drivers.

If I hadn't adapted my speed, I wouldn't have been able to brake in the bend.

The Desert Highway is long and can be very boring. There are places with steep slopes, dangerous bends, or even zig-zags.

In renewables, we visit wind farms and solar and hydro sites. We take different kinds of road: freeways, highways, secondary roads and tracks. The variety is nice but increases the risks.

As a rule, in Brazil, motorists drive fast. Everyone's in a hurry. It can be very hard to manage. When you're driving a long, heavy vehicle transporting hazardous products, one of the main rules is keeping a safe following distance behind the vehicle in front.

As I change vehicle a lot, every morning, I check the tires, headlights and mirrors.

On the road, there are places where the weather changes, and that can affect visibility. Between Aqaba and Amman, I saw a sandstorm come up in the distance. So I pulled over to park. I turned on my hazard lights so people could see me. And after the storm had passed, I drove on safely.

I've got a story about speed. I was driving uphill. I had slowed down. And an empty truck hit me from behind. I kept calm. I pulled over to park and see if the driver was OK. Fortunately, only the vehicle was damaged.

I often take roads that are very busy with trucks. We face a lot of risks. The last one was on the freeway: a truck pulled out in front of me without indicating. I was driving at a safe distance, so I was able to slow down, check my mirrors for other vehicles. I was able to pull out into the third lane and avoid the truck.

For me, being a #SafeDriver means driving off in the morning and coming home safe in the evening.

I am always alert when I drive.

Being a #SafeDriver means adapting to weather and driving conditions and driving sensibly, because behavioral mistakes can be costly.
