In this third episode, Christopher Elias, Head of Renewables Origination at TotalEnergies, guides us around Texas to show TotalEnergies’ Integrated Power Strategy across the entire electricity value chain—from origination and renewable generation to gas-fired firming capacity, trading, and customer supply.
Chris Elias, Head of Renewables Origination, TotalEnergies: Baseball great Ted Williams said hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports. And it is. Your eyes, hands, feet, almost every part of your body have to work together to make a round bat hit a round ball at exactly the right time. Right now power systems in the United States face a similar challenge. Renewables are transforming the grid but they can't do it alone. The country needs an integrated approach, which means that generation, storage, infrastructure and power management must work just like a baseball swing. Together as one.

Chris Elias: Texas is an incredible place. It's known for its vast landscapes, passionate sports culture, incredible barbecue. Less well known, though, is that Texas generates more renewable energy than any other U.S. state and is the fastest growing battery storage market in the nation.

Chris Elias: One of the first steps in building a cohesive, integrated energy system is bringing different energy sources together. Starting with harvesting the elements like wind and solar. TotalEnergies’ Piedra Solar project began construction not long ago. When it's complete, it'll cover nearly 3,000 acres. That's a big footprint of renewable power for the Texas grid. This is an impressive site.
Cameron Mabry, Project Manager, Piedra Solar, TotalEnergies: Yeah, the installation works are going exactly according to plan and to be honest, I cannot be any prouder of the teams that we have out here. In total we have over half a million modules going up on this site. We’re almost at 280 megawatts, which is going to power over 60,000 homes. We also plan to develop large scale battery facilities once the site is completed. These batteries will store excess solar power when demand is higher or the sunlight isn't available, helping provide a more stable and reliable energy supply.

Chris Elias: Most customers now are companies that need to have and be able to demonstrate that the power they consume is sourced from renewables. What's interesting is that we offer everything from certified renewable energy credits to tailored energy solutions, where we pair land with onsite generation and that helps us address the decarbonization goals of big companies like LyondellBasell, Saint-Gobain and big tech names like Google and Amazon. And of course, renewables aren't enough on their own. When the sun stops shining or the wind stops blowing, we need solutions like battery storage to bridge the gap or flexible generation to keep the power flowing.
Cameron Mabry: And that's where CCGTs come in.

Chris Elias: This is a different kind of power plant. Quite a change from the solar fields.
Shazma Khan, Vice President, Power Origination & Sales, TotalEnergies: Welcome to the engine room. We are at one of the most critical parts of the integrated value chain our company has built. Solar farms like Piedra generate significant amounts of renewable energy. But when that's not enough, or there is a sudden spike of demand, the grid needs support. These combined cycle generating turbines, also known as CCGTs, provide reliable electricity whenever renewables dip. A combined cycle natural gas plant burns natural gas to generate steam, which in turn generates electricity. These can be turned on and off.

Chris Elias: And so this is powered by natural gas that we produce and trade ourselves?
Shazma Khan: Yes it is. TotalEnergies currently owns 1.5 GW of power generating thermal assets in Texas. But generating power is only half the story really. What unlocks the value of a site like this is how the energy is managed and distributed.

Chris Elias: So this is where the balancing act really begins.
Shazma Khan: Exactly. And that's what happens in our trading floor in Houston.

Chris Elias: The trading room is where all parts of our electricity value chain come together. It's this integration that makes TotalEnergies stand out in the energy industry. The trading desk works in real time with all electricity sources, balancing renewables with gas, third party suppliers and grid requirements. Every megawatt produced here is fed into our integrated trading system, where teams monitor supply and demand as it happens and even buy electricity when needed. One of the pillars of TotalEnergies’ strategy is to expand across the entire electricity value chain. Expansion in renewable electricity is at the heart of TotalEnergies’ Integrated Power strategy. The Company plans to increase its net electricity production to 100-120 TWh by 2030, with approximately 70% of that electricity coming from renewable sources and 30% from flexible generation assets.
To support this ambition, TotalEnergies is developing a competitive and diversified portfolio of renewable assets, mainly wind and solar, while continuing to invest in flexible generation solutions such as CCGTs and battery storage. As the leading U.S. state for renewable electricity generation and the country’s fastest-growing battery storage market, Texas offers a particularly relevant environment to demonstrate the value of an integrated power model designed to combine competitiveness, flexibility and reliability.
The complementarity of renewables and flexible assets
One of the first steps in building such a system is bringing different energy sources together, starting with harvesting natural resources such as wind and solar, and integrating them into a broader energy ecosystem capable of meeting rising electricity needs.

A key example is the TotalEnergies Piedra Solar farm in Freestone County, which, once completed, will span nearly 3,000 acres and provide a significant source of renewable power for the Texas grid.
To further strengthen the site's contribution to grid reliability, TotalEnergies also plans to develop large-scale battery storage facilities. These batteries will store excess solar generation and release it when demand peaks or when sunlight is unavailable, helping to ensure a more stable, flexible, and reliable energy supply.
By combining renewable generation with energy storage, the site illustrates TotalEnergies’ integrated approach to the electricity value chain. In addition, it offers a range of solutions, from certified renewable energy credits to tailored energy packages that pair land access with on-site power generation. As a result, it directly supports the decarbonization ambitions of both established industrial players, such as LyondellBasell and Saint-Gobain, and leading digital companies, including Google and Amazon.

Colorado Bend I: the engine room
Solar farms such as Piedra Solar generate large amounts of renewable electricity, but when renewable output falls short or demand suddenly increases, the grid requires additional support. This is where Combined Cycle Gas Turbines (CCGTs), such as Colorado Bend I, located in Wharton County, play a critical role. Able to ramp up quickly, they provide reliable power whenever solar or wind generation declines.
A CCGT produces electricity by using natural gas to drive a first turbine, then capturing the waste heat to generate steam that powers a second turbine, significantly increasing efficiency. Because these plants can be started and adjusted as needed—using, in part, natural gas produced and traded by TotalEnergies—they complement renewable generation and help ensure a secure electricity supply.
The Colorado Bend I plant is also strategically located within the Houston power grid, a region experiencing strong growth in electricity demand driven by expanding industrial activity, data centers, and electrification trends. Today, TotalEnergies owns and operates three gas-fired power plants in Texas, representing a combined generation capacity of 1.5 GW.
However, generating power is only part of the equation. The full value of assets such as Colorado Bend I comes from their integration into a broader energy system, where generation, trading, and customer supply work together to deliver reliable electricity when and where it is needed most.
Houston: the trading room
The trading room plays a central role in TotalEnergies’ integrated electricity model, bringing together the different components of the Company’s electricity value chain. By connecting a diversified portfolio of assets within a single operational framework, it contributes to the development of a more integrated, flexible, and competitive energy system.
At the core of this system, the real-time trading desk continuously balances renewable generation, gas-fired power, third-party supply and grid requirements. This operational flexibility enables TotalEnergies to optimize its energy flows while designing solutions that are aligned with the specific needs of its customers.
Every megawatt produced is integrated into the trading platform, where teams monitor market conditions, supply and demand in real time. By optimizing output from the Company’s renewable assets and gas-fired plants—and sourcing additional electricity when required—they help ensure a reliable, efficient and responsive supply.
In this way, trading serves as a key enabler of TotalEnergies’ integrated power strategy, ensuring that customers receive the electricity they need, when and where they need it, while reinforcing the reliability and competitiveness of the overall system.
