Natural Gas, a Key Energy Source for the Energy Transition

For TotalEnergies, natural gas is a key energy for the transition: first of all, it plays a major role in electricity generation thanks to its flexibility and its ability to meet rapidly growing demand with the electrification of uses.

Natural gas emits half as much greenhouse gas (GHG) as coal in electricity generation and, by replacing coal, can achieve substantial emission reductions.

If gas is to fulfil this role, all the players in the chain – companies and governments alike – need to take action to combat methane emissions, as was highlighted at COP26 in Glasgow when 105 countries pledged to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030. TotalEnergies is committed to reducing its methane emissions by 80% by 2030.

In the gas markets, TotalEnergies is focusing on liquefied natural gas (LNG), which enables gas to be transported around the world. The Company is positioned as the world's 3rd largest LNG player, and the leading player in regasification in Europe.
