Tyra II: An Extraordinary Redevelopment in the North Sea

For decades the Tyra field has been a center for more than 90% of Danish gas production in the North Sea.

In September 2019, the gas production and delivery to Denmark was suspended to enable the redevelopment of the field.

Following the decommissioning of the old Tyra, eight new platform topsides, two jackets and six bridges were successfully installed representing the new Tyra II.

In the final redevelopment phase, all infrastructure and systems were reconnected, tested and powered up to ensure safe conditions for resuming Tyra’s production and delivering first gas to Denmark.

The onshore control room in Esbjerg plays a key role.

It’s here where teams can fully remote-control Tyra II, connected by a fiber optic cable under the sea.

Tyra II represents the central hub for Danish natural gas production in the North Sea, and it does not only process the gas from the Tyra reservoirs but also from the surrounding satellites and the Dan field.

The production from the surrounding fields arrives at the Tyra East well head and riser platforms.

Then the gas is transported to the high-tech processing module called TEG.

At TEG, the gas needs to go through different steps to reach the needed pressure to enable gas flow to the Danish consumers.

Thanks to Tyra II’s design and high-tech equipment, the facility can produce gas with high energy efficiency and 30% lower CO₂-emissions compared to the former facilities.

At the same time, flaring is reduced by 90% and strictly limited to safety matters.

Depending on the source of the gas, it needs to follow all or only a few processing steps.

First, the pressure of the gas needs to be raised.

This happens in the low and intermediate pressure systems or short LP and IP.

The high-speed machines bring the gas to a higher pressure.

Then we need to further process the gas to meet the commercial specifications

In the final stage, the gas receives a last pressure boost to be ready for export.

Then gas is sent back to Tyra East Echo via Tyra East Charlie and Bravo.

From here it flows through the pipelines to shore in Nybro in Denmark and Den Helder in Holland where it is distributed to the consumers.

When Tyra II is at full production, it is expected to supply 2.8 billion cubic meters of gas to Denmark and Europe every year.

This will enable Denmark to become self-sufficient and net-exporter of gas – an important step in becoming energy independent.
