ACC and electric mobility in Europe]

Matthieu Hubert: ACC’s a young firm. Less than two years old. It was born of the commitment of its two shareholders: Saft, a TotalEnergies affiliate, and Stellantis, the world’s fourth leading automaker. That team has now been joined by Mercedes-Benz. ACC’s mission is to design, make and sell batteries for electric vehicles.

Jean-Baptiste Pernot: Top performance is a must: high energy density, low charging time, top reliability. Electric vehicles have to be as green as possible in their manufacture and their whole supply chain. So ACC is working on a carbon footprint that is much smaller than those of current EVs using ultra-low carbon plants, innovative processes, operational excellence and a focus on the entire supply chain.

Matthieu Hubert: ACC’s target for 2030 is to produce the equivalent of 120 GWh. That’s roughly 2.5 million batteries to be used in electric vehicles, i.e. around 15% market share.

Matthieu Hubert: ACC is sticking closely to its roadmap which was set in 2020. First is setting up a state-of-the-art R&D center. That was inaugurated in September 2021 at Bruges in the outskirts of Bordeaux. It currently employs nearly 500 people, including 150 to 200 researchers. Then there’s a second part to the roadmap: the pilot plant at Nersac, near Angoulême. The Nersac plant is going to develop the product, our battery prototype, and the process so that the product and process can converge optimally. There will be a first gigafactory in northern France, near Douvrin, a second gigafactory in Germany and a third gigafactory at Termoli, in Italy. ACC aims to be a European leader in the emerging industry of batteries for EVs.
