France: TotalEnergies Selects New Site for its New Energies & Electricity R&D Unit in Paris-Saclay

News

Paris, January 28, 2022 – As part of its transformation, TotalEnergies decided back in 2018 to establish its New Energies & Electricity R&D unit in the Paris-Saclay science and technology cluster in 2022, thereby contributing to the site’s development.

TotalEnergies’ plan was to house its R&D teams in its own building within the Paris-Saclay cluster, close to École Polytechnique. However, the building’s construction is significantly behind schedule and is the subject of legal proceedings that will take years to resolve.

And yet the development of new energies won’t wait and neither can TotalEnergies’ transformation, which picked up pace in 2021.

TotalEnergies has therefore decided to move its teams into the Paris-Saclay cluster this year as planned, by permanently establishing its New Energies & Electricity R&D unit in premises designed to house corporate innovation centers. The unit will comprise more than 200 researchers and will develop collaborative partnerships with academic and corporate research labs and start-ups.

As a result, TotalEnergies will not build its own premises close to École Polytechnique, while nonetheless maintaining its research partnerships with Institut Polytechnique de Paris, and more particularly with the Energy for Climate (E4C) center and the Hi! PARIS center on data science and artificial intelligence.

TotalEnergies’ research collaborations in Paris-Saclay

Over the years, TotalEnergies has developed many science and technology partnerships with various teams in the Paris-Saclay area:

  • Partnership since 2007 with the Laboratory of Physics of Interfaces and Thin Films (LPICM) relating to photovoltaic solar power.
  • Founding member, since 2013, of the Ile-de-France Photovoltaic Institute (IPVF), an energy transition institute that brings together French manufacturers, equipment suppliers and academic partners.
  • Partnership with two of Institut Polytechnique de Paris’ interdisciplinary centers:
    - Energy for Climate (E4C), with the “Technological challenges for responsible energy" (DTER) chair, since 2018.
    - Hi! PARIS center (with HEC) on data science and artificial intelligence, set up in 2020.
  • Research projects with Joint Research Units (on such topics as methane detection, through the TRACE chair initiated in 2018).
  • Member since 2019 of VEDECOM, an energy transition institute dedicated to the mobility solutions of the future.
  • SINCLAIR, a joint laboratory set up in 2020 with EDF and Thales to develop artificial intelligence for critical systems.
