Total has won the City of Paris’ concession tender to upgrade and extend its public electric vehicle (EV) charge points. This success story caps a winning year for Total in electric mobility and gives Alexis Vovk, President of Marketing & Services, an opportunity to discuss the Group’s strategy for this fast-growing market.
What does the contract with the City of Paris involve?
Alexis Vovk: Total has been chosen to manage the city’s public charge point network for the next ten years. The contract covers the supply, installation and technical and commercial operation of the network, which will ultimately have 2,300 charge points. After Amsterdam, Brussels and London, another major European city has selected Total’s expertise to support its residents’ changing mobility habits.
In what way is electric mobility a growth market for Total?
A.V.: Mobility is clearly going through profound changes, as can be seen with the emergence of electric mobility. This trend will rapidly accelerate, driven by regulations to decarbonize transportation at both the national and municipal levels. Joining the revolution and supporting our customers as they move to this new form of mobility is a fantastic growth driver for the Group, aligned with our ambition to get to net zero in Europe by 2050 for all of our production and the energy products used by our customers.
What will be Total’s strategy for expanding in this area?
A.V.: For now, we’re focusing on the European market, where demand for dedicated infrastructure will grow quickly and where we already have a major retail network. The challenge will be to give our individual and business customers access to charge point services that meet their needs – at the workplace, in public areas, in shopping districts or in our service station network. To deploy these services and gradually extend our coverage, we are aiming to gain footholds in major urban centers, like we started to do this year, and install high-power charging points along major highways. Our goal is to operate 150,000 charge points in Europe in 2025, including 300 service stations equipped with high-power charge points in our network. Helping our three million cardholders* transition to electric mobility is another very promising avenue and a priority focus in our development. More broadly, the Group’s integrated model is a major strength for making Total an essential player in electric mobility. Total is able to serve customers across the electric mobility value chain, starting with power generation via Gas, Renewables & Power, manufacturing of electric batteries for vehicles with affiliate Saft and the comprehensive range of solutions offered by Marketing & Services.
